Welcome to Waupaca Foundry. Our company is the world's largest manufacturer of grey iron, ductile iron, compacted graphite, austempered and high-strength ductile iron castings. We take pride in producing best-in-class iron castings.   The cost to the UK foundry industry to purchase new sand and subsequently dispose it to landfills is considerable (especially after the introduction of UK landfill tax: £/t and £/t for active and non-active waste respectively), which affects turnover.

site contain a closed hazardous waste landfill that is acres (Landfill) and is shown on the survey plat attached hereto as Exhibit A dated October 7, prepared by James T. Foundry sand, an indispensable component of the metal casting process, is discarded after a number of metal casting operations. Virgin sand is then required for any new casting processes, and the spent foundry sand is treated as waste, resulting in huge amounts of discarded sand being either stockpiled or dumped into landfills. A field study at four ferrous foundry waste landfills is conducted to determine presence of organic compounds leached from the solid wastes. Laboratory results indicate that although a wide variety of organic compounds are detected, most are present at low concentrations.

IDEM says the foundry's acre landfill along I was intended only for non-hazardous wastes. However, it says Auburn Foundry overfilled Foundry landfill book landfill and disposed of hazardous wastes there. As with other materials going into solid waste landfills, foundry sands need to be tested to be sure they are non-hazardous, although few properly segregated foundry sands would be.

Foundry sand to be used in landfill construction applications needs to have comparable physical characteristics as the soils, sands or other materials that it would. Foundry by products and casting waste. March 4, admin Waste Management 0. but it can be effectively utilised to recover some materials that would otherwise have been sent to landfill.

For example, if waste pellets contain zinc they can be melted in suitable incinerators, vaporizing the zinc through the thermal process and leaving waste.

Landfills: Foundry sand can cover a landfill surface or be used as a backfill for landfill drainage systems.

Pipe Bedding: Trenches used for storm drains or sanitation sewers can utilize foundry sand as backfill. CHALLENGES & CONSIDERATIONS. Though facilities may dismiss the beneficial use of foundry sand due to possible toxicity, many.

Waste foundry sands are industrial wastes of important quantity. Because of the partially very high contamination of these sands with polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), some of them potent carcinogens, dumping of these sand in landfills without appropriate safety measures, or use in road and landscape construction is very problematic.

Used foundry sand (UFS) (Fig. ) is a discarded material coming from ferrous (iron and steel) and nonferrous (copper, aluminium, and brass) metal-casting industry to create molds and cores. About 1 ton of foundry sand for each ton of iron or steel casting produced is used (Siddique and Noumowec, ).

For foundry use, sodium silicates with ratios between 2 and 3 and water content around 56% are usually used. Sodium silicate can be hardened in a number of ways: by adding weak acids (CO 2 gas or organic esters), by adding various powders (di-calcium silicate, anhydrite etc.) or by removing water.

For many years, the waste sands generated by foundry industry were successfully used as landfill materials (Ham et al. ; Kniese ). But disposal by landfill of waste sands is becoming an increasing problem as legislation is getting tighter and economic as disposal cost by current practices increases rapidly (Stevenson ).

What is Foundry Sand. • Foundry sand is a high-quality uniform silica sand that is used to make molds and cores for ferrous and nonferrous metal castings.

• Foundry sands typically comprise of >80% high-quality silica sand, % bentoniteclay, 2 to 5% water and less than 5% sea coal. This set of Hazardous Waste Management Multiple Choice Questions & Answers (MCQs) focuses on “Landfill Disposal – Design and Construction”.

Foundries Unite to Develop State-of-the-Art Landfill Ground was broken in late August near Reading, PA, for a state-of-the-art landfill facility for foundry sand, slag and dust.

"Nobody has a solid waste disposal system like the one we are building," said Joseph J. Manzella, Jr., president of Process Recovery Corp (PRC).But thanks to research and planning, our foundry sand can be kept out of landfills and reused as a replacement for native clay, which needs to be mined as a natural resource.

Foundry sand, as a byproduct of our green sand casting process, contains up to 15 percent clay and is readily available from our three Waupaca, Wisconsin, foundries.
